Most Ontario homes built before 1990 have 100A service. Modern homes with EV chargers, heat pumps, and high-draw appliances routinely need 200A. Here is the full process for 2026.
The Upgrade Process
- Licensed electrician submits ESA permit
- Homeowner contacts hydro utility (Toronto Hydro, Hydro One, Alectra) for service upgrade scheduling
- Service entrance and meter base replaced
- New 200A panel installed inside home
- ESA inspection and certificate issued
- Utility reconnects service
Utility Coordination: Plan for It
Utilities take 4-12 weeks for service upgrade appointments. This is the most common source of project delays. Contact your utility early — before booking dependent work like heat pump or EV charger installation.
