Choosing flooring: compare the product, room and installation quote
LF Builders editorial contribution · October 13, 2026. LF Builders backs this forum and has a commercial interest in renovation work.
The flooring types mentioned above are a starting point. To make a shortlist, describe the room and compare the exact products each installer proposes. Include the floor level, existing surface, any known dampness, pets, cleaning needs and the appearance you want.
Questions for each flooring option
| Option | What to ask before choosing |
|---|---|
| Hardwood | Is it solid wood or engineered wood? Is this product approved for this room and subfloor? What does its manufacturer say about refinishing and moisture conditions? |
| Vinyl plank or tile | Which installation method is quoted: floating, glue-down or another system? What preparation and underlayment does that exact product require? What does its warranty cover for water exposure? |
| Laminate | What are the product’s room-use and water-exposure limits? Which underlayment, transitions and expansion details are included? |
| Ceramic or porcelain tile | What tile and installation system are specified? What floor preparation, grout, edge details and any wet-area work are included? |
| Carpet | Which carpet and cushion are specified? What are the cleaning instructions, warranty conditions and arrangements for future repairs? |
Solid and engineered wood are different constructions. The National Wood Flooring Association’s explanation describes solid wood as one piece and engineered wood as layered construction. Use the proposed product’s instructions when checking suitability and refinishing options.
For vinyl, Shaw’s installation guide explains why subfloor preparation and product-specific installation instructions matter. It also identifies room clearing, old flooring removal, underlayment and finishing details that should be discussed with the installer. This is a manufacturer example, not an endorsement of a particular brand.
Compare the complete job
Ask each installer to itemise:
- Exact product, quantity, waste allowance and supply responsibility.
- Moving furniture, removing the old floor and disposal.
- Subfloor inspection and the preparation included in the price.
- How any additional preparation is assessed, priced and approved.
- Underlayment, adhesive, transitions, trims and door adjustments where required.
- Installation schedule, payment milestones, warranty and care instructions.
A material-only price and a complete installation quote cover different work. Confirm the scope before comparing totals. Our homeowner guide’s quote checklist can help organise those questions.
For help comparing options, ask a renovation question with the room, existing floor, exact product names and the decision you need to make. Remove names, addresses and contact details from any quote you share publicly.
