GTA Plumbing Era Guide 2026
Understanding what era your plumbing is from determines your renovation scope and budget.
Pre-1950 Homes
Lead supply pipes: Must replace. No safe level of lead. Repipe with copper or PEX-A: $8,000-$18,000 for a typical semi-detached.
Cast iron drain stacks: Camera inspect. After 70+ years, deterioration likely. Replacement: $6,000-$14,000.
1950s-1970s
Galvanized steel supply: Corrodes from inside – reduced pressure, rusty water, eventual failure. Replacement straightforward but requires wall access.
Signs it’s time: Reduced pressure at shower, rust-coloured water first in morning, visible corrosion at fittings.
Cast iron drains still present: Camera inspect before finalizing renovation scope.
Cost to repipe 1960s semi: $8,000-$16,000 in copper or PEX-A.
1970s-1990s
Copper supply: Generally excellent. Watch for pinhole leaks (rare in GTA water chemistry but possible in older copper).
ABS drains: Reliable plastic system. Check for improper slope (common in DIY installations).
2026 Best Practice
If doing a full gut renovation of a pre-1980 home: replace all supply piping and camera-inspect all drains WHILE WALLS ARE OPEN. Cost while open is a fraction of post-drywall replumbing.
