Stone Types for Toronto Patios
Limestone (Eramosa, Credit Valley): The quintessential Toronto patio stone — warm greys and tans that complement red brick Victorian and Edwardian homes. Mid-range cost. Good freeze-thaw performance when proper bedding face is laid up.
Bluestone (Pennsylvania): Cool blue-grey tones. Very durable. More formal look. Premium pricing ($30–$50/sq ft material alone).
Granite: Extremely durable, cold and contemporary look, harder to cut so premium labour cost.
Sandstone: Warm tan/rust tones. Softer stone — select carefully for Toronto climate, as lower-quality sandstone can delaminate.
Installation: Dry-Laid vs Wet-Set
Dry-laid (sand or stone dust bed): Better for Toronto’s freeze-thaw because individual stones can move slightly without cracking. Better drainage. Individual stones can be reset after frost movement. Standard polymeric sand joints.
Wet-set (mortar bed): Tighter look, more formal. Mortar joints eventually crack and need repointing. Higher upfront cost.
For most Toronto residential patios, dry-laid is our recommendation.

- Basic irregular limestone, simple layout: $18–$28/sq ft installed
- Premium stone (bluestone, granite) or cut patterns: $32–$55/sq ft
- 400 sq ft backyard patio: $7,200–$22,000 typical range
Questions to Ask When Getting Quotes
- What stone thickness are you using? (Minimum 1.5" for Toronto patios)
- What depth sub-base are you preparing? (Minimum 6" compacted granular)
- Are you using polymeric sand or regular sand for joints?
- Do your quotes include stone delivery, cut pieces, and edge finishing?
