The ‘smart renovation’ — integrating EV readiness, solar preparation, and connected systems — has become standard in quality GTA renovations. Here’s the 2026 guide.
EV charging rough-in (highest priority)
The economics are obvious: adding a 240V/50A circuit to the garage costs $500–$1,500 when walls are open during renovation. The same circuit costs $3,000–$6,000+ through finished walls. With EV adoption accelerating, this is a non-negotiable investment in most GTA renovations.
Spec: 240V, 50-amp circuit (NEMA 14-50 outlet), minimum 40-amp for Level 2 charging. Panel must have capacity.
Solar PV preparation
If there’s any chance of future solar installation, run conduit from the electrical panel to the roof during major renovation. The incremental cost is minimal. Retrofit without conduit adds significantly to solar installation cost.
Structured wiring / network drops
Cat6A to every room costs very little when walls are open. Retrofit is expensive and disruptive. Smart home systems (Lutron, Nest, Ring) can run wirelessly, but wired backbone improves reliability and future-proofs the home.
200A panel as foundation
EV charging, heat pumps, electric appliances, and smart systems all draw on panel capacity. 100A is insufficient for 2026 modern home loads. 200A upgrade is the foundation of any forward-looking renovation.
