Vinyl Siding Installation and Replacement Guide for Ontario Homes 2026
Vinyl siding is one of the most popular exterior claddings in the GTA — low maintenance, durable, and affordable. Here is what you need to know about grades, installation, and Ontario climate performance.
Vinyl Siding Grades
| Grade | Thickness | Cost per Sq Ft |
|---|---|---|
| Entry-grade | 0.040" | $4-8 |
| Residential (most common) | 0.042-0.044" | $6-12 |
| Premium/architectural | 0.046-0.055" | $10-18 |
| Insulated (foam backing, R-2 to R-3) | Variable | $12-22 |
Ontario OBC Installation Requirements
- Building permit required for full replacement
- House wrap or drainage plane behind siding (mandatory in new construction, strongly recommended in retrofits)
- 1/4-inch minimum gap for drainage
- Nail hem must be loose — vinyl must float to expand and contract with temperature. Nailed tight = buckling in GTA summer heat.
Colour Selection Warning
Dark colours (LRV below 55) can cause warping on south/west-facing walls. Most manufacturers void warranties on dark colours without their specific dark-colour product line. Light grey, beige, and white carry the fewest climate risks.
Complete Installation Scope
Full replacement includes: J-channel at windows/doors, corner posts, vented soffit panels, fascia covers, utility trim at foundation, and frieze board. Trim quality and fit determines overall appearance.
