Waterproofing: The Most Critical Step
Tile and grout are NOT waterproof. A dedicated waterproof membrane (Schluter Kerdi, RedGard, Wedi) is mandatory before shower tile. Moisture behind tile is the primary cause of mould, rot, and tile failure in Ontario bathrooms. Any contractor skipping this step is building a future problem.
Shower Floor Slope
Minimum 1/4 inch per foot slope toward drain. Improper slope causes standing water and mould. Pre-sloped shower base systems (Kerdi, Wedi) are the most reliable way to achieve proper slope.
Subfloor Flatness for Large Format Tile
Large format tile (24x24+) requires subfloor flatness of 1/8 inch in 10 feet. Self-leveling compound often required on Ontario older homes. Uncoupling membrane (Schluter Ditra) prevents tile cracking from subfloor movement.
Labour Costs in Ontario 2026
Basic floor tile: $8-$15/sq ft labour. Full shower surround: $15-$30/sq ft. Kitchen backsplash: $10-$20/sq ft. Heated floor mat: +$3-$6/sq ft.
