Contractor Workmanship Warranty
Industry standard: 1-2 years in writing. Premium contractors offer 5 years. Warranty must specify: what defects are covered, claim process, response time, whether labour and materials are both included. Verbal warranty = unenforceable.
Manufacturer Warranties
- Roofing shingles: 25-50 year material (labour not included)
- Windows: 20-25 year frame (shorter on seals)
- Composite decking: 25-50 year material
- Appliances: 1-5 years by brand
Manufacturer warranties are voided by improper installation. Confirm your contractor is a certified installer for major products.
Tarion: What It Does NOT Cover
Tarion warranty applies to newly built homes only - NOT renovation projects on existing homes. Renovation work is covered only by the contractor’s workmanship warranty. Never rely on Tarion for a renovation dispute.
