Renovation fraud costs Ontario homeowners tens of millions annually. This thread covers the most common scam types and how to protect yourself.
Storm Chaser Scams
Unlicensed contractors canvass door-to-door after major storms offering discounted roof/siding work. They take large deposits, disappear or do poor work. Always wait 2+ weeks after a storm before hiring. Urgency is the red flag.
Deposit and Payment Scams
Legitimate GTA contractors ask for 10-30% deposit max. Never pay more than 30% upfront. Always pay by cheque or e-transfer - cash leaves no paper trail. Do not release final payment until work is complete and a walkthrough is done.
Expand-the-Scope Scam
Low initial quote, then continuous discovery of new problems requiring additional spend. Legitimate surprises happen in renovation - but they require written, signed change orders before work proceeds. Verbal additions on the final invoice are a red flag.
