Knob-and-Tube Wiring (Pre-1950)
Most Ontario insurers won’t insure homes with active K&T. No ground conductor. Open air wiring system.
Cost to replace: $12,000-$25,000 for a typical GTA home.
Required before any major renovation – you can’t insulate over K&T without creating a fire risk.
Aluminum Wiring (1960s-1970s)
Not inherently dangerous if properly managed. Problem: oxide layer at connections + expansion/contraction rate.
Solution 1 – Pigtailing: Connect aluminum runs to short copper pigtails at every device using approved connectors (Ideal 65 or AlumiConn). Cost: $3,000-$10,000. ESA-accepted.
Solution 2 – Full replacement: $8,000-$18,000. Complete peace of mind.

Do this during renovation – costs 3-4x more after walls close.
AFCI/GFCI Requirements (Current OBC)
- GFCI: within 1.5m of any water source
- AFCI: bedrooms (and expanding with each code update)
