We finally pulled the trigger on the hot tub we have been talking about for three years. Oakville detached, 2003 build, decent backyard. Total cost ended up being $21,400 all in. Here is the full breakdown.
The hot tub: We went with a Beachcomber 570 (7-person, 71 jets). Supply only from the Burlington dealer: $14,200 including delivery and crane placement (our gate is too narrow to roll it in).
Electrical: This is where it got expensive. Our 100-amp panel was maxed out — every circuit had something on it. The hot tub needs a dedicated 50-amp 240V circuit with GFCI breaker and a disconnect box within sight. Electrician quoted us panel upgrade to 200-amp plus the hot tub circuit: $4,100. Permit and ESA inspection included. Took two days — one for the panel, one for the circuit run.
Concrete pad: We poured a 10x10 reinforced pad, 5 inches thick to handle the 3,800 lb loaded weight. Concrete contractor: $1,800. We had to wait three weeks for a spot — summer backlog.
Oakville permits: The town requires a building permit for any hot tub plus a separate electrical permit. Building permit was $210, took 11 days to come back. They inspect the fence/safety cover after installation.
Safety cover and fencing: Our existing fence is 5 feet, which meets Oakville’s requirement. The locking cover that came with the tub satisfies the secondary barrier requirement.
Total: $14,200 (tub) + $4,100 (electrical) + $1,800 (pad) + $210 (permit) + $180 (misc) = $20,490. Close enough to $21,400 with taxes on the permit.
Running costs: Hydro is up about $90/month in winter, $50 in summer. Worth it. We use it 3-4 times a week.
