Electric vs Hydronic - Key Differences
Electric systems use resistance cables embedded in concrete or asphalt. They are cheaper to install ($12-20/sq ft) but more expensive to run given Ontario TOU electricity rates. Hydronic systems circulate a glycol/water mix through PEX tubing connected to a boiler. Higher upfront cost ($18-30/sq ft installed) but lower operating costs, especially if you already have a natural gas boiler for in-floor heating.
Typical Costs in the GTA
For a 500 sq ft double driveway expect:
- Electric: $8,000-$15,000 installed
- Hydronic: $10,000-$18,000 installed
New construction is significantly cheaper since the system is installed during the pour. Retrofit (removing existing driveway) adds $2,000-$4,000 for demolition.
Permits Required
Electrical permits required in Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton for hardwired systems. Hydronic tied to boiler may also require a mechanical permit. Always check with your local building department.
Smart Controls Are Essential
Automatic precipitation + temperature sensors can cut operating costs by 40-50% vs manual operation. Look for systems with remote monitoring via app so you can control it when you are away.
