Tile for GTA Renovations 2026: Choosing Right and Installing to Last
Tile is the most enduring finish material available – when properly selected and installed. Here is the 2026 guide.
Selection by Application
Kitchen backsplash: 3x12 subway, herringbone, or large format porcelain (12x24). Budget $8-$35/sq ft for tile, $15-$25/sq ft installation.
Bathroom floor: Mosaic or small format for slip resistance. Large format needs precision leveling with decoupling membrane.
Bathroom/shower walls: Large format porcelain (24x48 or larger) is the 2026 premium look. Requires proper substrate.
Shower floor: Mosaic tile or grouted large format with slope to drain. Linear drains paired with large format porcelain are the current premium approach.
The Substrate is Everything
Wet areas: Cement board (Hardiebacker) or Schluter KERDI-BOARD required. Standard drywall behind shower tile = 3-5 year failure.
Floor tile: Schluter DITRA membrane over wood subfloor prevents grout cracking from subfloor flex. This $2-$5/sq ft investment prevents callback callbacks.
Grout Selection
- Unsanded: Joints under 1/8 inch
- Sanded: Wider joints
- Epoxy grout (Mapei Kerapoxy, Laticrete SpectraLOCK): Stain-resistant, no sealing, premium for kitchen backsplash and shower floors. Higher installation cost.
Large Format Tile Warning
24x48 and 36x36 tile requires a substrate flat to within 1/8 inch per 10 feet. GTA wood-frame floors almost always need subfloor leveling compound. Most tile failures are substrate failures.
