Tile Shower Installation for GTA Homes 2026
A properly built tile shower should last 20-30+ years. A poorly built one fails in 2-5. The difference is entirely in the substrate and waterproofing. Here is what you need to know.
Why Tile Showers Fail
- Absent or inadequate waterproofing membrane (most common)
- Wrong substrate material (standard drywall or greenboard in wet areas)
- Grout cracking at changes of plane (should be caulked, not grouted)
- Drain flange leakage or improper slope to drain
Waterproofing Options
| System | Cost Premium | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Schluter KERDI membrane | $300-600 | Industry gold standard, fully bonded |
| RedGard liquid membrane | $100-250 | Budget option, quality depends on application thickness |
| Wedi board | $400-800 | Rigid foam, factory-applied waterproofing |
| Acrylic shower pan | $200-600 | Factory base, eliminates floor leak risk |
Substrate Requirements
Walls: Cement board (Durock, HardieBacker) is standard. Never use standard drywall or greenboard in direct-wet areas.
Floor: Mortar bed (traditional, provides custom slope) or Schluter KERDI-SHOWER-ST pre-sloped tray (faster installation).
Tile Selection
Walls: Any glazed ceramic or porcelain. Large format (12x24 or 24x24) is trending — fewer grout lines.
Floor: Minimum COF 0.6 wet (ANSI A137.1). Mosaic tiles (2x2 or smaller) are most slip-resistant.
Grout and Caulk
Epoxy grout (Laticrete SpectraLOCK, Mapei Kerapoxy): Stain-resistant, waterproof, virtually maintenance-free. 2-3x cost of cement grout. Recommended for GTA showers.
Silicone caulk: All changes of plane (floor-to-wall, inside corners, around fixtures) must be caulked — never grouted.
Cost Guide
