GTA Interlock Driveways 2026: Materials, Costs, and What Actually Lasts

Interlock Driveways in the GTA: The 2026 Homeowner Guide

After 50+ years of interlock installations across Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, and the rest of the GTA, here’s what actually matters when you’re planning a driveway or pathway project.

Material Options

Concrete pavers (Unilock, Permacon, Cambridge)

  • Most common, best value
  • 60mm thickness for driveways, 40mm for walkways
  • Cost installed: CAD $18–$30/sq ft
  • Huge colour/texture range

Tumbled natural stone (granite, limestone)

  • Premium look, excellent longevity
  • Cost installed: $35–$65/sq ft
  • Best for paths, courtyards, front entries

Porcelain pavers

  • Modern, low-maintenance aesthetics
  • Vulnerable to GTA freeze-thaw if improperly installed
  • Cost: $30–$55/sq ft
  • Requires rigid base

The Base Is Everything

This is where most DIY and low-bid jobs fail. Ontario requirements for driveways:

  • Minimum 6" compacted Granular A base (some recommend 8" in heavy clay soils)
  • 1" bedding sand
  • Aluminium or concrete edge restraint on all free edges
  • 2–3% slope away from structures
  • Full excavation to undisturbed subgrade

Frost heave in the GTA comes from inadequate base compaction and poor drainage — not the pavers themselves.

2026 Pricing Benchmarks

  • Standard 2-car concrete paver driveway (~500 sq ft): $12,000–$18,000

  • Interlock patio (200 sq ft): $7,000–$14,000
  • Natural stone walkway with steps: $8,000–$16,000
