Replaced both garage doors on our Oakville home last fall after one spring snapped and the other was clearly on borrowed time. Sharing the decision process and what we paid.
Why We Upgraded Beyond Basic
Our old doors were single-skin steel with no insulation - basically R-2. The garage is attached, there’s a bedroom above it, and the floor is always cold in winter despite having in-floor heat in the garage. After reading up on thermal bridging I realized the doors were a massive part of the problem.
What We Chose
Garaga Cambridge CC (raised panel steel, polyurethane insulation core):
- R-16 rating
- 2-inch thick construction
- Pre-painted white
- 2 windows per door (top panel)
Cost - Two 9x7 ft Doors Installed
Materials (2 doors): $3,840
Installation + removal of old doors: $780
New LiftMaster 87504 openers (2): $960 (includes battery backup)
Total: $5,580
Battery Backup - Worth Specifying
The LiftMaster 87504 has a built-in battery backup. Used it three times already during brief outages. Not having to manually disconnect and lift a heavy insulated door in an ice storm is absolutely worth the premium.
Before/After for Heating
Garage went from 4-6 degrees C in January (with heater running) to holding 14-16 degrees. Room above garage floor temperature noticeably more comfortable.
Tip: Time Your Purchase
We got quotes in August (slow season) and saved about $400 vs the spring busy season. August/September tends to be the best time to buy garage doors in the GTA.
