Over-The-Rangr Microwave Vs A Proper Range Hood Vent?

Need some layout advice for a small kitchen budget remodel. Right now, our microwave sits on the countertop and takes up a massive amount of our limited workspace. To clear up counter space, I am trying to decide between two options for the wall space above our stove.

Option 1 is to buy an over-the-range microwave that has a built-in exhaust fan underneath it. This solves two problems at once because it gets the microwave off the counter and provides lighting for the stove.

Option 2 is to install a proper, dedicated under-cabinet range hood vent and find somewhere else to hide a cheap small microwave, like on an open pantry shelf.

My concern is that those microwave combo exhaust fans are usually pretty weak and just recirculate the smoky air right back into the kitchen instead of venting it outside through the wall. If you cook a lot of seared steaks or stir-fry, does an over-the-range microwave actually handle the smoke and grease, or should I invest my budget into a real high-CFM range hood vent instead?

Over the range microwaves save space but the ventilation is usually underpowered. If you cook often, especially frying, a dedicated range hood makes a noticeable difference. Then place a small microwave somewhere else in a cabinet.

Go with Option 2. Over-the-range microwave fans are notoriously useless for high-heat cooking. A dedicated high-CFM range hood actually clears smoke and grease, keeping your small kitchen breathable.

I think I would prefer microwave because I’m use to it and it’s easier to use
