HRVs are mandatory in new Ontario construction and increasingly essential in renovated homes as airtightness improves. Here’s the 2026 guide.
HRV vs ERV:
- HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilator): Transfers heat only, dries incoming air. Correct for most Ontario applications.
- ERV (Energy Recovery Ventilator): Transfers heat + moisture. Useful in extremely tight homes where retaining indoor humidity is a priority in heating season. Less common in Ontario.
OBC ventilation requirement:
For a typical 3BR/1,500 sq ft home: ~55-65 L/s (120-140 CFM) total ventilation.
Maintenance (most common HRV failure is neglect):
Every 3-6 months: wash filters with soap and water, clean heat exchange core, check condensate drain, inspect exterior hoods.
Neglected HRVs under-perform or fault out – worse than no HRV for air quality.
GTA installation costs (2026):
| Scope | Cost |
|---|---|
| HRV unit (Lifebreath, Venmar, Fantech) | $700-$1,500 supply |
| Install connected to existing forced-air | $1,500-$3,500 |
| Dedicated HRV ductwork (no forced air) | $3,000-$6,000 |
| Total installed | $2,200-$7,500 |
Canada Greener Homes Grant: up to $1,000 for HRV/ERV.
