The front walkway gets overlooked on most quotes. It’s not the biggest scope item, and contractors often price it quickly or bundle it with a driveway without thinking through the site-specific details. That’s a problem, because a front walkway in the GTA takes more punishment than almost any other exterior surface, and the failure modes are specific to how the job is set up.

Why a walkway is harder than it looks

A standard front walkway runs 100 to 180 square feet, a fraction of a driveway, but the complications don’t scale down proportionally.

Access is usually tight. Most walkways run through a narrow corridor alongside the house or directly up the front yard with no room for equipment. All the base material, aggregate, and finished stone comes in by hand or with a small wheelbarrow. That’s slower than a machine-accessible driveway, and the labour cost per square foot reflects it.

Salt exposure is worse than anywhere else on the property. A front walkway borders the public sidewalk, where city salt trucks run. Which paver surface holds up to salt

Smooth-face and polished pavers look clean when new. Salt is a problem on them. The reaction leaves white residue that builds up on smooth surfaces and is hard to remove fully between seasons. On a glossy paver, it’s visible constantly.

Tumbled or antiqued pavers have broken, irregular edges. Salt residue settles into the texture and becomes much less noticeable. The same amount of salt damage reads as character on a tumbled surface and looks like neglect on a polished one.

Sealing helps with salt penetration, but timing matters. Sealing right after installation traps moisture under the paver face and accelerates spalling. The right sequence is to seal after the first full winter, once the surface has cured, been cleaned, and fully dried. If a contractor offers same-day sealing at the end of installation, that’s backwards.

On colour: lighter stones (tan, sandstone, ivory) handle salt deposits better visually than dark pavers. High-contrast borders also make settling more obvious later, worth thinking about before you commit to a dark field paver with a light border.

The right-of-way check most homeowners miss

In Toronto and across most GTA municipalities, any work within the municipal right-of-way requires a utility locate before digging. That strip of grass between your property line and the sidewalk looks like your yard, but it’s not your jurisdiction for construction purposes. Ontario One Call (1-800-400-2255 or online) handles the locate for free, and the contractor needs to confirm it before breaking ground.

Toronto requires a Road Occupancy Permit if equipment will block the road or sidewalk, even briefly. Vaughan and Mississauga have the same rule. The permit takes a few days to process and affects when the job can start.

A solid quote names the paver manufacturer and product, not just “interlock pavers.” It states the base depth and lift protocol. It covers what happens to the existing surface, including disposal cost. It lists edge restraint type, confirms utility locate status, and notes whether a right-of-way permit applies. The warranty section says what’s covered specifically, not just for how long.

A quote that gives one number without specifying the paver or base depth is not really a fixed price. It’s a starting number that turns into a conversation once the job opens up.
