So I just had a local company come out to give me an estimate on updating my kitchen cabinets. The boxes themselves are completely solid maple and in perfect condition, so I figured just swapping out the doors and drawer fronts (refacing) would be a smart way to save some money.
Boy was I wrong. The quote they just handed me is $14,000. Fourteen grand! Just to take off the old doors, slap some veneer on the sides of the existing boxes, and put new doors on.
For that price, I feel like I could literally go to IKEA or a local supply shop, buy completely brand-new custom cabinets, tear the old ones out myself, and still have money left over for a vacation. Am I losing my mind here or is the cost of cabinetry just completely out of control right now?
They tried to justify it by saying it includes all new soft-close hinges and labor, but the labor is only supposed to take two days. I don’t see how two days of work and some new door fronts equals the price of a used car. Has anyone else looked into refacing lately? Did you get completely insane prices like this too, or am I just getting ripped off by this specific company? I’m honestly tempted to just buy a paint sprayer and do them myself in the garage at this point because there is no way I’m paying that much.
