Basement quote check $8,500 for a French drain and sump pump?

I need a serious reality check on a waterproofing quote I just got. Our basement has been getting damp every time it rains heavily, and last week we actually got about half an inch of standing water in the far corner near the foundation wall.

I called out a big local waterproofing company and the inspector told me we need an interior French drain cut into the concrete floor, a vapor barrier on the walls, and a new heavy-duty sump pump basin installed. Total price tag? $8,500.

I almost fell out of my chair. Is this standard pricing or am I getting completely taken for a ride because they know I’m stressed out? It’s literally just plastic pipe and gravel, how is the labor that expensive? Has anyone done this recently and paid less, or should I get a couple more opinions before signing this contract? I’m terrified of the next big storm but $8k is a lot of money right now.

That price is actually very standard for interior drainage work. The cost isn’t materials; it’s the brutal labor of jackhammering concrete and hauling tons of stone. Definitely get other quotes.

Thanks for your insights I do appreciate
