Quick question on basement climate control. Our basement doesn’t have any visible water leaks or puddles, but it always has that classic, heavy “basement smell” and the humidity sits around 70% if we don’t do anything about it.
Right now we are just running a standard portable dehumidifier down there 24/7. It works great and keeps the air feeling dry, but it pulls a ton of electricity and I hate having to constantly empty the bucket every single day.
My question is, are we just treating a symptom instead of fixing the actual issue? Is that moisture coming directly through the unsealed concrete walls, or is it just normal for below-grade spaces to be sticky? I’m trying to figure out if there’s a cheap permanent layout upgrade I can do to fix the airflow, or if running a dehumidifier forever is just part of owning a house.
