Why some homes feel strangely louder at night after renovations

I’ve never thought about doing an acoustic version of a song in my home before, but I’ve noticed some newly renovated spaces somehow feel a little bit louder with echoes after the whole renovation process.

I think one of the things that causes it is the modern renovation styles.

The open layouts, hard flooring, the large empty walls, and little furniture will create more echo compared to older homes that have carpets, rugs and other thick materials, and smaller separated rooms.

At night, the echo becomes easy to notice because everything else is quieter and small sounds are always louder. Footsteps, doors closing, kitchen noises, appliance sounds, and conversations from another room will travel farther than expected.

I also think modern materials cause it too. A lot of these modern designs focus heavily on clean visuals like tile, glass, stone, and other smooth surfaces, but those materials only reflect sound instead of absorbing it.

The interesting part is that a home can look beautiful after renovation and still be uncomfortable because of the unnecessary noise.

So sometimes, adding softer things like rugs, curtains, fabric furniture, or wall decorations will make a surprisingly big difference.

Some homes probably become quieter during the day because of background noise outside, then suddenly feel louder at night once everything else goes silent. Small echoes and sound reflections start standing out way more.

Open layouts, hard floors, and smooth surfaces like tiles or glass tend to reflect sound, so even small noises travel more.

You’re absolutely right. A lot of modern renovations unintentionally sacrifice sound comfort for aesthetics. Open layouts, hard surfaces, and minimal decor may look clean, but they reflect sound everywhere. Sometimes a few rugs, curtains, plants, or fabric furniture can completely change how peaceful a space feels without affecting the design.

There are some cases when during the night some noise tends to sound from the roof due to the quietness of the house

Thanks for this insight it really help me
