The time a “simple wall paint job” turned into a full re-plastering nightmare

honestly thought repainting a room would be one of the easiest things in the whole renovation process. Just scrape a little, apply new paint, and the place looks fresh again.

That was the plan.

But once the work started, things didn’t go as expected. The contractor pointed out that the old paint wasn’t sitting well on the wall anymore. Some parts were peeling slightly, and underneath, the plaster wasn’t as solid as it looked from the surface.

At first, it still felt like something small. I assumed they would just smooth it out and continue with the paint job.

But then the problem kept growing.

The more they worked on the wall, the more weak spots started showing. Sections that looked fine began to crumble when touched. What was supposed to be a quick paint refresh slowly turned into removing old plaster and redoing the surface properly.

Instead of a simple paint job, it became a full re-plastering job I didn’t budget or plan for.

What surprised me most is how something as simple as paint can expose deeper issues that were already there, just hidden for years.

In the end, the “easy job” ended up being one of the most stressful parts of the renovation.

That’s the frustrating part about renovations — surface problems often hide deeper issues underneath. A job that looks simple at first can quickly expand once work begins, especially in older walls where years of wear stay hidden behind paint.

This is exactly how those quick paint jobs end up becoming way bigger than planned. You start working and then realise the wall isn’t even in good condition, so everything just escalates from there.

Quick paint jobs often expose deeper issues like wall damage, and that’s when the work quickly becomes bigger than expected.

It most problem I face during renovation especially with old walls, think for this tip I will add up to my knowledge

There’s nothing simple in renovation, some walls before repainted needs alot of work, old paint sometimes cannot match new paint and some soft places in the wall needs to be filled properly
