The top dual flush button on the bathroom toilet tank completely snapped its internal plastic levers this morning, leaving the water running constantly into the bowl. If the valve doesn’t seal right, the tank never fills up and you waste hundreds of gallons of water. Picked up a standard replacement fluidmaster button kit to fix it.
The old plastic assembly was completely coated in thick limescale and slime from sitting inside the water tank for years. Trying to unscrew the plastic locking nut from underneath the tank lid was a total hassle because the threads were completely seized up with mineral deposits. My pliers kept slipping off the smooth plastic edges, meaning I had to use a flathead screwdriver to slowly chip away at the scale just to get the nut to turn.
Setting up the new plastic rod extensions to the exact correct length was another massive test of patience. If you cut the plastic push-rods even a millimeter too long, the flush valve stays cracked open and the tank leaks constantly. Had to trim the plastic tips down three separate times with a utility knife, testing the button depth over and over again until the mechanism actually clicked down flush against the ceramic lid.
Screwed the new chrome button housing tightly into the lid hole and hooked the clips onto the main flush tower. Turned the water valve back on and verified the tank fills up completely and shuts off right at the fill line. The flush mechanism triggers perfectly now.
