Smook Contractors Ltd is one of Northern Manitoba’s most established heavy civil and site development contractors, with roots stretching back to 1949 when five Smook brothers — Peter, Jerry, Bill, Steve, and Nick — operated a saw mill and built municipal roads around Vita, Manitoba. When major contracts with Inco (now Vale), the Department of Highways, and the newly incorporated City of Thompson materialized in 1967, Smook made the permanent move north — and the company has been a cornerstone of Northern Manitoba’s construction and resource sector ever since.
