I got tired of stumbling out of bed every morning to yank open the heavy blackout curtains in the living room, so I bought one of those fancy motorized tracking kits that you control with a remote. The box showed a simple diagram of a metal rail sliding into place and pairing instantly with a little plastic clicker. Instead, I spent half my Friday standing on a wobbly chair wrestling with a heavy aluminum track and trying to figure out why the motor kept reversing itself every time I pressed the button.
The initial nightmare was just getting the old curtain rods down from the drywall. The previous hardware was anchored with these massive plastic toggle bolts that completely tore up the plaster when I tried to back the screws out, leaving two giant holes right above the window frame. I had to spend an hour mixing up a batch of quick dry spackle, patching the holes, and waiting for it to dry before I could even position the new heavy-duty metal mounting brackets. Holding a twelve foot metal track perfectly level against the ceiling by myself while trying to drive a self tapping screw into a wall stud was an absolute balancing act.
Once the track was secure and the heavy fabric was hung up, the real tech frustration started with the calibration sequence. The instructions were clearly translated from another language and made zero sense. Every time I hit the open button, the motor would pull the curtains halfway, make a horrible grinding noise, and then slam shut again because the digital limit sensors were completely out of alignment. I had to climb back up on the chair, hold down a tiny reset button with a paperclip for ten seconds, and manually pull the fabric across the rail five separate times just to get the tracking computer to memorize the length of the window.
The curtains finally slide open smoothly now when I click the remote, but the smart sync is completely wonky. My dog figured out that the motor makes a whirring noise right before the fabric moves, and now he barks at the window every single time the tracking turns on. My wife accidentally linked her tablet to the frequency too, so whenever she adjusts her volume in the kitchen, the living room blinds start randomly opening and closing on their own, which is making the living room look completely haunted.
