Scam alert home owners beware

The #RCMPNB is warning residents about a scam targeting homeowners involving unsolicited attic inspections and home repair services in the Acadian Peninsula region.

Police have received several reports of individuals going door-to-door stating they are with an insulation/refrigeration company from Quebec offering free attic inspections, while claiming to be associated with a NB Power program. Once inside the home, the individuals allegedly present homeowners with photos of supposed mold, faulty insulation, or other damage in their attic.

Homeowners are then pressured into agreeing to costly repairs and signing contracts on the spot, with requested payments reportedly ranging from $3,000 to $8,000.

Residents are reminded to take the following precautions to protect themselves from fraud:

• Never allow unsolicited contractors into your home
• Do not feel pressured to make immediate decisions or payments
• Always ask for identification and verify credentials directly with the company
• Obtain multiple quotes before agreeing to repairs
• Report suspicious activity to police immediately

Anyone who believes they may have been targeted or victimized by this scam is asked to contact their local police.

Scammers are all over the world right now and we have to be careful not to fall victim to their schemes

This is exactly why homeowners need to stay careful during renovations. A lot of scam contractors use pressure tactics, demand huge upfront payments, disappear halfway through jobs, or do terrible work with no accountability. Always verify licenses, get everything in writing, and never rush into agreements no matter how convincing someone sounds.

Can I ask what’s RCMPNB?

The scams out there are now getting rampant and a full stop needs to be applied with Iimmediate effect

The pressure tactic is usually the giveaway. Real inspections don’t end with “sign here right now for $3k–$8k repairs”
