One of the main square concrete paving stones leading up to the front porch steps completely cracked into three pieces after a heavy delivery truck clipped the edge of the lawn. Leaving those loose, broken chunks right in the middle of the main walkway was a massive tripping hazard for anyone coming up the path after dark. I picked up a standard gray pre cast replacement slab at the garden center to fix the line before someone took a bad fall.
The demolition phase was easily the most frustrating part of the whole afternoon. The broken pieces were wedged tightly into the surrounding earth and old packed gravel, so prying them out required aggressively hammering a flat pry bar into the seams. When the first heavy chunk finally snapped free, a huge swarm of angry ants exploded out from the dirt underneath and scrambled all over my work boots, which completely ruined my focus.
Trying to get the new heavy stone to sit perfectly level with the rest of the path took way too much trial and error. If the ground underneath isn’t completely flat, the new slab will rock back and forth and instantly crack the first time someone steps directly on the corner. I spent an hour hunched over on my knees, manually scooping out wet clay, throwing down layers of leveling sand, and checking the spirit level over and over again until my arms were shaking.
The new concrete block is finally set firmly into the ground track now and sits completely flush with the surrounding stone walkway. Walking across the path feels completely solid without any shifting or loose wobbling under your feet, and the soil along the edge is firmly packed down. The front entry path is fully repaired.
