Open floor plan layout dilemma - kitchen to living room flow

Need some layout advice from anyone who has done a remodel recently. We knocked down the wall between our kitchen and living room to make it open concept, which is great for light, but now I’m totally stuck on how to position the furniture.

Right now, the way we have the couch set up means if you sit down, your back is completely turned to the kitchen. It feels kind of weird when someone is cooking or cleaning and trying to talk to people in the living room, it feels totally disconnected. But if I turn the couch around to face the kitchen, it completely blocks the main walkway into the room and makes the whole space feel crowded.

How do you guys handle the layout flow in open spaces? Do you use things like area rugs or low bookshelves to divide the areas up, or do you just let everything flow together? I’m really struggling to find the right balance here.

Open floor plans always sound great until you actually try balancing the kitchen and living room together one side usually ends up affecting the vibe of the other more than expected.

My preferred layout is using a rug in the middle and a center table on top of it, then I surround it by chairs.

It may seem very popular but that’s the best for me

Floating the couch and anchoring it with a large area rug works wonders. Put a slim console table behind it to bridge the gap and keep the flow totally open.

I did float the couch a bit away from the wall and use a rug to fill the space. A slim table behind it helps with flow and keeps the walkway open without feeling blocked or cramped

I don’t like the Setup, I prefer my kitchen to have it own privacy, and I hate food smell in the living room

For me I don’t like it like that I like them separated because many distractions or it costs many problem later on
