I’ve noticed open-concept renovations remain very popular because they can make homes feel larger, brighter, and more connected.

Removing unnecessary walls often improves natural light flow and creates better interaction between spaces like the kitchen, dining area, and living room. It can make smaller homes feel much more open without adding extra square footage.

At the same time, I think open layouts also come with challenges such as reduced privacy, more noise, and less separation between activities.

That’s why I believe the best renovations balance openness with practicality instead of simply following trends.

In some homes, partial separation or smart room design may work better than completely open spaces.

Do you prefer open-concept layouts or more separated rooms in a home renovation?

I prefer a balanced layout with some openness but still enough separation for privacy and noise control. Open concept designs feel bright and modern, but having defined spaces often makes a home more comfortable for everyday living.

In whatever we do there’ll surely be advantages and disadvantages but I think I do prefer open concept layers

greener homes grant is effectively dead for new applicants - stopped accepting registrations back in late 2023. OHPA is still running but funding gets allocated quarterly so even if you’re approved, payment can take months.

what’s actually worth doing right now: the EnerGuide audit. qualifies you for everything else and some utilities give a partial rebate just for completing it. also worth looking into the property assessed clean energy programs a few GTA municipalities have been rolling out - you pay the upgrade cost through your property tax bill over 5-20 years which solves the upfront cash problem for a lot of people.

one thing i’ve seen trip people up: getting the audit, picking the contractor, then finding out the work has to happen within a specific window for the rebate to apply. that window is shorter than most people assume. the admin timing matters as much as the eligibility.
