Just wanted to put this out there for anyone currently picking out tile and walls for their kitchen or bathroom backsplash. When we did our remodel last year, I fell in love with the look of bright white ceramic tiles paired with a dark charcoal gray grout. It looked so sharp, modern, and high-contrast in all the design photos I saw online.
Well, we’ve been living with it for a year now, and I absolutely regret it.
Here is the problem nobody tells you about: if your tile cuts aren’t 100% physically flawless, dark grout will highlight every single tiny mistake, crooked line, or uneven spacing like a giant neon sign. Even worse, if you use a dark cement-based grout, the pigments can actually stain the edges of light-colored tiles during the installation process, leaving a hazy look that is impossible to clean off.
On top of that, hard water spots and soap residue turn dark grout a crusty grayish-white over time, so it actually looks dirtier faster than light grout does. It requires constant scrubbing with specialized cleaners just to keep the color looking even. If you are on the fence about doing high-contrast grout to save yourself some cleaning time, do yourself a huge favor and just stick to a neutral light gray or beige instead. It’s way more forgiving and won’t make you want to rip your walls down after a few months
