Honestly, I completely underestimated how stressful it is to mess with home electrics. My house still had some ancient, sketchy wiring hiding behind the walls, and after a couple of outlets started sparking last week, I knew I couldn’t ignore it anymore. But wow, fishing new cables through old drywall is an absolute nightmare.
I spent basically the entire Saturday stuck inside my cramped, dusty attic space trying to pull fresh Romex lines. There is nothing worse than sweating in the dark while aiming a fiberglass fish tape down a tiny wall cavity, just praying it hits the hole three rooms away. At one point, I got a wire stuck on a hidden stud and pulled so hard I almost ripped a massive chunk out of my living room ceiling.
The mental paranoia is the worst part. Even though I flipped the main breaker and checked the lines three separate times with a voltage tester, my heart was still pounding every single time I had to snip a wire. You literally cannot make a single mistake with electricity, or you end up burning the place down.
If you are thinking about doing this yourself to save a buck, just pack some serious patience. Wear a good dust mask so you don’t breathe in 40 year old insulation, label every single breaker line with a sharpie immediately, and if you get overwhelmed, just stop and call a professional. My hands are full of cuts and my back is completely shot, but seeing those new outlets finally power up without a single pop was the biggest relief.
