I used to think interior design was only important for people trying to show off their houses online. To me, a house was just a place to sleep and keep your stuff. As long as everything worked, I didn’t really care how it looked.
That changed after I helped my sister rearrange her living room a few months ago.
She didn’t buy anything expensive. We moved some furniture around, changed the curtains, added a small lamp near the corner, and painted one wall a lighter color. Somehow the entire room felt different after that. The place looked brighter, calmer, and honestly more comfortable to sit in.
What surprised me most was how small changes made such a big difference. Before that day, the room always felt crowded even when nobody was there. After rearranging things, it suddenly felt more open.
Lighting also matters way more than people think. Some houses have good furniture but still feel dull because the lighting is bad. Warm lighting usually makes a room feel more relaxing, especially at night. Bright white lighting can look cleaner and more modern depending on the style of the house.
I’ve also noticed people in different places prefer different interior styles. A friend in Canada likes simple modern designs with lighter colors because they make rooms feel less gloomy during winter. Meanwhile my cousin in Arizona prefers darker furniture and warmer colors because it matches the climate there better.
Another thing I learned is that interior design is not really about making a house look expensive. It’s more about making the space feel comfortable for the people living there. Some of the nicest homes I’ve seen were actually simple homes where everything just felt natural and organized.
Now whenever I enter a room, I pay attention to little details I never noticed before. Things like lighting, spacing, wall colors, and even where furniture is placed can completely change the feeling of a home
