DIY Kitchen Refresh: Small Changes You Can Do Yourself

Updating your kitchen doesn’t always mean ripping everything out and spending tens of thousands. There are plenty of smart DIY projects that can make your kitchen feel brand new without the chaos of a full renovation. I’ve done several of these myself, and they always get the most compliments.

Some of the best DIY kitchen wins include painting your existing cabinets, replacing old hardware with modern knobs and pulls, installing a new backsplash, adding under-cabinet lighting, or swapping out the faucet and sink accessories. These upgrades are very doable over a few weekends.

Cabinet painting is especially popular right now. Clean the surfaces really well (grease is the enemy), lightly sand, apply a good primer made for laminate or wood, then use a quality cabinet paint. It takes patience and multiple thin coats, but the transformation is huge. You can also reface just the doors or add peel-and-stick wallpaper to the backsplash if you want something quicker.

For lighting, under-cabinet LED strips are beginner-friendly and make cooking much more enjoyable. They often come with adhesive backing and plug right in. Changing the faucet is another easy win — most new ones come with clear instructions and flexible hoses that connect without complicated plumbing.

A few things to keep in mind:

Work on one section at a time so your kitchen doesn’t become completely unusable.

Take clear photos before disassembling anything.

Measure carefully — especially for backsplashes and hardware spacing.

Choose durable, moisture-resistant materials since kitchens get a lot of use.

You can easily refresh your kitchen for under $1,000 if you focus on these cosmetic upgrades, compared to $25k+ for a full remodel. The best part is you can live in the space while doing it, and the results feel custom without the massive price tag.

It’s amazing how much better you’ll feel cooking and hanging out in the kitchen after these small but thoughtful changes.
