Changing a simple cabinet knob turned into a massive drilling headache

The metal knob on my main bathroom vanity drawer completely snapped off its base this morning, leaving the screw stuck dead inside the wood and making it impossible to open the drawer to get my toothbrush. I bought a cheap pack of basic matte black replacement knobs at the store, figuring it would take about two seconds to just twist a new one into place. Instead, dealing with stripped threads turned a tiny hardware swap into a giant mess.

The old screw was totally jammed solid inside the wooden faceplate. Every time I tried to use a regular screwdriver to back it out, the metal head just stripped even worse until it was completely smooth. I had to go find my power drill and a tiny metal extraction bit to literally bore a hole straight through the center of the stuck bolt just to force the broken pieces out of the wood. The drill bit slipped on my first try and left a nasty little scratch right next to the opening, which completely ruined my mood.

The real breakdown happened when I went to install the new matte black knob. The screws that came in the retail box were about half an inch too long for my specific drawer depth, so the knob just wobbled around loosely instead of tightening down flush against the wood. I had to scramble through my messy scrap bin in the garage for twenty minutes just to find some tiny metal washers to stack behind the screw head to take up the extra slack.

The knob is bolted down tightly now and the drawer opens smoothly without any wobbling or sticking. The black finish matches the rest of the vanity fixtures well enough, but that little drill scratch is staring right at me every time I step up to the sink.

Thank you for this wonderful, definitely useful for whenever I need to replace a cabinet

Small hardware fixes always start simple, then turn into drilling, adjustments, and improvising but it feels good when the drawer finally works smoothly again.
