Carpet vs Luxury Vinyl Plank for a basement floor?

We are currently debating what kind of flooring to put in our basement. It’s a dry space overall, but since it is below grade, it naturally gets that slightly cold, chilly feel underfoot during the winter months.

My husband really wants to put down a thick, plush carpet with a good pad underneath because he says it will make the room feel way warmer and more cozy for watching movies.

I’m leaning heavily towards Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) with a good underlayment because it’s waterproof and if we ever do get a minor plumbing leak or a backup, we won’t have to rip the whole floor up and throw it away. He thinks LVP will feel too hard and freezing cold to walk on.

What do you guys prefer for basement flooring? Is carpet down there a terrible idea long-term, or am I being too paranoid about potential water damage?

I prefer tiles for flooring

Go with LVP and a thick underlayment. Basements always risk moisture, and ruined carpet smells awful. Add large area rugs for your husband’s cozy movie nights best of both worlds!

Go for tiles for durability and easy maintenance

LVP offers better moisture protection and durability, while carpet provides warmth and comfort; choice depends on risk tolerance and lifestyle.
