My old wooden back steps were literally rotting to pieces, so I finally ripped them down this week to build a proper raised balcony platform. I honestly thought I’d have the framing done in a single weekend. Man, I was so wrong. Trying to wrestle heavy timber into place by yourself is just an absolute nightmare.
The absolute worst part was digging the footing holes. My backyard dirt is basically 90% solid clay and packed with random rocks, so my shovel was doing absolutely nothing. I spent hours sweating like crazy just trying to dig deep enough for the concrete base. By the time I finally got the cement poured, my shoulders were completely numb and my hands were a total mess of blisters.
But the real breakdown happened when I tried mounting the main ledger board to the house wall. If that piece of wood is even a tiny bit crooked, the entire deck warps and nothing lines up later. I was literally balancing a heavy twelve-foot joist on my shoulder while trying to hold a level, aim my drill, and drive in these massive lag bolts all at the same time. I ended up dropping my impact driver, bruising my knee, and cursing loud enough for the neighbors to hear me.
If anyone is planning to build a deck or an elevated balcony yourself, seriously, do not do it alone. Get a friend to help you hold the heavy stuff, make sure you have a real impact driver because a regular drill will just smoke and die on those thick structural screws, and buy way more lag bolts than you think you need. I can barely stand up straight today, but sitting out there on a plastic chair last night with a cold drink made the misery worth it.
