1. Project Overview Location: Hudson Valley, New York Design Firm: Upstate Down, founded by Delyse Berry Property Type: Historic farmhouse, dating back to 1780 Objective: Restore the property after water damage while preserving its historic character and introducing modern comfort. * * * 1. Historical Context Original features included hand-hewn beams, hand-blown glass windows, and initials carved into woodwork. The design aimed to embrace the home’s imperfections as part of its charm, rather than masking them. * * * 1. Renovation Scope Structural Updates: Full gut renovation after burst pipes; new mechanical systems and insulation installed. Restoration: Vintage flooring, beams, and windows preserved and highlighted. Modern Enhancements: Improved light flow, open walls, and contemporary elements such as a cement fireplace. * * * 1. Design Philosophy Approach: “Embrace, don’t erase”—maintaining quirks like low ceilings and small windows. Palette: Monochromatic, neutral tones that allow historical textures to stand out. Furniture & Styling: Minimalist furnishings chosen to complement, not overpower, architectural details. Balance: Seamless blending of old-world charm with modern-day livability. * * * 1. Key Highlights Authenticity: Preserved patina and imperfections enhance the home’s story. Atmosphere: Low ceilings and intimate spaces turned into cozy, moody retreats. Functionality: Enhanced day-to-night transitions with thoughtful lighting and spatial planning. Statement Feature: A modern cement fireplace designed as a nod to traditional hearths. * * * 1. Outcome Overall Feel: A timeless residence that honors its historic soul while providing the comfort of modern living. Impact: Demonstrates how preservation and innovation can coexist beautifully in home renovation. ---
