If you’re handling your own plumbing during a home renovation, dealing with plumbing inspectors is an important step you can’t afford to overlook. Inspections ensure your work meets safety codes, functions properly, and won’t lead to costly problems down the line. Here’s what to look out for to make the process smooth and successful.

1. Know the Local Codes
Before you even touch a pipe, familiarize yourself with your local plumbing codes. These rules vary by location and cover everything from pipe size and material to venting and drain placement. If your work doesn’t meet code, it will fail inspection—and you’ll need to redo it.

2. Pull the Right Permits
Even if you’re doing the work yourself, permits are usually required. Failing to get one can result in fines, delays, or being forced to tear out finished work. Contact your local building department early to understand what’s required and when inspections will take place.

3. Be Honest and Prepared Inspectors respect homeowners who are upfront about doing the work themselves. Make sure everything is visible and accessible during the inspection—don’t cover walls or floors before approval. Have your plans ready, along with any manufacturer instructions or product specs.

4. Use Approved Materials and Techniques
![IMG\_7403|281x500](upload://7qsj3e456DB7Gh7Y3w83q9SO8Z9.jpe
Cutting corners with cheap fittings or incorrect pipe types is a red flag for inspectors. Stick to materials that meet local standards, and install everything as recommended by manufacturers.

5. Don’t Argue—Ask Questions
If an inspector flags something, don’t take it personally. Use the opportunity to learn. Ask for clarification and understand what needs to be fixed. They’re there to help you do it right and safely.

Final Tip: Treat inspections as part of the process, not a hurdle. Passing them means your plumbing is safe, legal, and less likely to cause problems later. Doing the work yourself is rewarding, but getting the sign-off from a professional makes it complete.
