Schenck House Renovation: A Historic Preservation Success The Schenck House renovation is a testament to the importance of preserving historic buildings and the impact of thoughtful restoration. Located on the grounds of the Grover Cleveland Golf Course, the Schenck House is widely considered one of the oldest extant stone structures in the City of Buffalo. The Renovation Process The renovation project, which began in 2022 and was completed in August 2025, involved a comprehensive restoration of the historic house. Some of the key highlights of the project include: 1. Addressing Water Damage: Full remediation and removal of mold and damaged elements to prevent further deterioration. 2. Structural Stabilization: Stabilization of the rear addition to create a new kitchenette for public use. 3. Modern Amenities: Installation of new drywall, floors, roof, HVAC, restroom, interior and exterior lighting, windows, trim, drainage, and landscaping. Future Plans The renovated Schenck House is set to become a public museum dedicated to Erie County Park and regional history. Future plans for the site include ¹: 1. Public Hours: Setting public hours for visitors to explore the historic house. 2. Guided Tours: Offering park ranger and historian-led tours and talks to share the rich history of the area. 3. Rotating Exhibits: Featuring rotating exhibits that showcase the history and culture of the region. Conclusion The Schenck House renovation is a shining example of historic preservation done right. By restoring this iconic structure, Erie County has not only preserved a piece of its history but also created a valuable resource for the community. As the project nears completion, the anticipation is building for the grand reopening and the opportunities it will bring for residents and visitors alike to connect with the region’s rich history. With its successful restoration, the Schenck House is poised to become a beloved destination for years to come. ---
