Electrical panel upgrades are now driven by three things: EV chargers, heat pumps, and safety compliance. This thread covers 2026 costs and what Ontario homeowners need to know about permits. **Why GTA Homes Need Upgrades Now** Homes built before 1980 commonly have 60-amp or 100-amp panels. A Level 2 EV charger alone requires 40-50 amps dedicated. Heat pumps add another 30-60 amp load. Knob-and-tube or aluminum branch wiring creates insurance issues and fire risk - many Ontario insurers now require remediation before coverage. **Panel Upgrade Costs 2026** - 100A to 200A: $2,500-$4,500 installed - 200A to 400A (large home, EV + heat pump): $4,000-$8,000 - Subpanel (garage, addition): $800-$2,000 - ESA permit: $200-$400 - Hydro One/Toronto Hydro service upgrade (if required): $500-$2,000 additional **ESA Permit Process** All panel work in Ontario requires an ESA permit and inspection. Licensed electrical contractor required - no DIY panel work. ESA inspection sign-off triggers meter upgrade from the utility if service size increases.
