Panel upgrades are one of the most common renovation-triggered electrical projects in Ontario. Here’s a complete breakdown for 2026. **Signs you need an upgrade:** - Fuse panel (glass fuses) – must be replaced - Fewer than 20 circuits in a 3+ bedroom home - Planning EV charger (Level 2 requires 40-60A dedicated circuit) - Installing heat pump, hot tub, or basement apartment - Breakers tripping regularly **Service size guide:** - **100A:** Marginal for modern loads. Struggles with EV + heat pump + modern kitchen simultaneously. - **200A:** Standard for all new construction and most upgrades. Handles typical modern loads comfortably. - **400A:** Large homes with multiple EVs, radiant heating, or detached garage subpanels. **GTA cost ranges (2026):** - 100A to 200A upgrade: $2,500-$4,500 - 200A service + new panel: $3,000-$5,500 - 400A service upgrade: $6,000-$10,000 - Subpanel (garage/basement apt): $1,200-$2,500 - Level 2 EV charger circuit: $800-$1,800 **ESA process:** All electrical work requires ESA permit + inspection. ESA certificate is checked by insurers and in real estate transactions. _Licensed electrician referrals at [home.renovation.reviews](https://home.renovation.reviews)_
