Last spring, after a heavy rainstorm, I noticed water dripping from my kitchen ceiling. My first thought? “Here we go another expensive roof repair.” But after inspecting the problem, I realized it wasn’t the whole roof, just a small section of flashing around the chimney that had worn out over time. I headed to a local hardware store and spent $75 on roofing sealant, a few replacement flashing pieces, and a caulking gun. Armed with those supplies, I climbed onto the roof and carefully applied the sealant, replacing the damaged flashing. The work was sweaty and a bit nerve-wracking, but nothing complicated. Once I finished, I tested it with the garden hose and just like that, the leak was gone. What could have turned into a major repair turned into a quick, cheap fix. It reminded me that sometimes, tackling a problem yourself with a little research and effort can save hundreds or even thousands in the long run.
