## Smart Home Integration and Pre-Wiring Guide for GTA Renovations 2026

Smart home technology is now a standard expectation in GTA renovations. The most important decisions happen before the drywall goes up. Here is what to pre-wire and what systems to specify.

### Pre-Wire During Renovation (Non-Reversible Decisions)

Before closing walls, rough-in:

- **Structured media cabinet (SMC):** Central hub for router, network switches, patch panel. Location: basement or main floor mechanical room. Size: 18 or 28-inch rack.
- **Cat6 ethernet:** Every room — minimum 1 drop per 150 sq ft. Living areas: 4 drops. Home office: 2-4 drops.
- **HDMI conduit (1" EMT):** TV wall to equipment rack — allows future upgrades without wall opening.
- **In-wall speaker wire (14/2 or 16/2 rated):** Ceiling and wall positions to AV rack location.

- **Doorbell conduit:** 18/2 wire from doorbell to panel/transformer.

### Smart Lighting Systems
