One of the most obvious shortcomings of a hacky and stacky house is lack of design harmony. Over the years, makeshift additions and quick fixes have often led to mismatched styles, uneven layouts and clashing finishes. Rooms can be disconnected, with varying types of flooring, inconsistent treatments on the walls, strange extensions which make the house appear disorganised. Renovation provides the opportunity to gather these scattered elements together in a cohesive and functional design.

The first step is to identify a central design theme - whether modern, traditional, rustic or minimalist - which can be used to guide the renovation. Once the style has been defined, decisions made on flooring, wall colours, cabinetry and fixtures should be in the pattern of the theme. This doesn’t mean that every room needs to look exactly the same, but there needs to be a sense of flow and connexion throughout the house.

Layout adjustments may be needed, as well. Removing awkward partitions, levelling floor spaces or widening cramped openings can help to restore balance and movement in the house. Even simple upgrades such as matching doors, trims or window styles can help to create a sense of continuity and reduce the “patchwork” look.

Conclusion:
Design consistency is not just about what a house looks like, but it is directly related to the comfort and livability of a house. By swapping out mismatched finishes and playing the layouts harmoniously, a hacky and stacky house can be transformed into a home with definition and balance. The renovation not only looks better, but makes it more functional too, which will make the space inviting and coherent for years to come.
