With rents being what they are, I keep wondering if space I already own could help cover the mortgage. A basement with its own entrance or a small unit out back seems like an obvious move, but the rules seem to shift depending on where you live, right down to ceiling height, window sizes, parking, and whether your lot is even big enough. Then there are the neighbours, who are not always thrilled about a second household next door. Has anyone here actually finished a basement suite or added a backyard unit, and what surprised you most about getting it approved?
