Without proper insulation they lose heat rapidly causing the space to be uncomfortable and pushing up energy bills. The right insulation does not only warm the basement, it also helps to protect against moisture problems. Rigid foam boards are one of the best options for basement walls. They are resistant to moisture, have excellent thermal behaviour and act as a barrier to condensation. Unlike fibreglass batts, foam boards will not absorb water, lessening the chance of mould. Spray foam insulation is another good choice. It expands to fill in gaps and cracks to seal air leaks, as well as insulate at the same time. This helps it work well in irregular surfaces or difficult to access areas in basements. For the flooring, insulated subfloor panels are an option which combine a moisture barrier with a thermal protection. These panels help to keep the floor dry while making the basement more comfortable to walk on. Traditional fibreglass insulation can still be used, but you need to take care with its installation and moisture control. Without the proper protection it can trap dampness and encourage mould. Conclusion The best insulation materials in the basement combine warmth resistance and moisture resistance. Of particular note are rigid foam, spray foam, and insulated panels for their ability to keep basements both dry and energy efficient.
